iPhone Automation Using Shortcuts App
All these times, ever since I’ve had my smart phone, I don’t turn off my wifi. It automatically connects to existing wifi networks that I have previously setup on my phone. This is a convenient way to stay connected automatically to known networks. It also helps if you don’t have much data for your mobile phone’s plan. The phone would use wifi if there is a connection. This is all fine, except if you have a wifi network setup already, and you happen to drive by that network, your phone would automatically try to connect to it. The annoying part is, once you drive a little further away from that location, the wifi signal would drop and the connection would drop. The phone would try to switch back to the mobile phone’s network for data. So, whatever you were doing with the phone whether listening to music or on a FaceTime call, the connection may lag or cutoff for a bit until the connection is stable again.
Well, to avoid all of this trouble, Apple iOS has an app called Shortcuts which has automation functionality which you can setup once and your phone will automate the task of turning off the wifi, and trning back on when you are leaving or returning to a specific location like your home.
Steps to turn off wifi when leaving a specific location:
- Open Shortcuts app
- Navigate to Automation tab
- Hit the + sign
- Select Leave
- Pick your location, Any Time, Run Immediately
- Hit Next
- Pick New Blank Automation
- Search for wifi
- Pick Set Wi-Fi
- Set Turn Wi-Fi Off
Follow similar steps above but instead of “Leave”, pick “Arrive” to turn the Wi-Fi back on when you get back home.
I hope this tip helps you if you’ve the same problem as I did. Hopefully, you find this tip useful.
